Google open sources its Collaborative IDE
July 9, 2012 news, Google engineer Scott Blum published an article on Google+ which revealed that Google would open source the Collaborative IDE. The project was named "Collide" (collaborative IDE), which is a Web collaborative code editor. Google hopes that Collide can serve as a catalyst for improving the state of web-based IDEs.Caution Collide does not have any proper auth, SSL support, or user account management just yet. Please consider that fact when running instances that expose important...

Emacs adventures
I have been using Emacs for over a year now. I actually didn’t learn a lot when I started using it (just the basics to get going and then some relatively common keyboard shortcuts), but lately I have been reading and learning much more about it. I’m so grateful by everything I’ve learned from different people on the net that I wanted to share a couple of things I’ve learned, and a simple major mode for editing AsciiDoc documents. As a long-time VIM user, I f...
HTML5 Video and DRM
Many people call HTML5 an Adobe Flash replacement and I agree. Adobe already discontinued Flash on mobile devices. So HTML5 Video is a must for video on mobile phones and tablets. On the desktop Flash Video players are used more than HTML5 Video players but HTML5 video will work with a current web browser on a site that supports HTML5 video. Commercial video sites like YouTube will play partnered content in Flash even if you turned on HTML5 video at http://www.youtub...

JavaScript as a First Language
At Khan Academy we've been investigating teaching Computer Science to students in some new and interesting ways. The most interesting aspect of which is that we're likely going to be teaching them JavaScript as their first language. We're in a very unique position as we're primarily aiming to teach students who've been through our previous math and science-centric curriculum. Because of this we can create some rather compelling exercises and projects that never would've been feasible other...

Web Security: In-Depth Explanation of X-XSS-Protection
What is X-XSS-Protection X-XSS-Protection is an HTTP response header designed to enable or configure built-in cross-site scripting (XSS) filters in certain versions of Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari. The purpose of these filters is to detect reflected XSS attacks in the response and prevent the loading of pages, thereby protecting users from such attacks. The X-XSS-Protection response header was initially introduced by Microsoft in Internet Explorer 8 to control the browser's XSS filter. ...

Using PHP sessions across subdomains
By default, PHP uses the 'PHPSESSID' cookie to propagate session data across multiple pages, and by default it uses the current top-level domain and subdomain in the cookie declaration. Example: www.domain.com The downside to this is that the session data can't travel with you to other subdomains. So if you started a session on www.domain.com, the session data would become unavailable on forums.domain.com. The solution is to change the domain PHP uses when it sets the 'PHPSESSID' cookie. ...

That “JavaScript not available†case
During some interesting discussions on Twitter yesterday I found that there is now more than ever a confusion about JavaScript dependence in web applications and web sites. This is a never ending story but it seems to me to flare up ever time our browsing technology leaps forward. I encountered this for the first time back in the days of DHTML. We pushed browsers to their limits with our lovely animated menus and 3D logos (something we of course learned not to do again, right?) and we were ...

Facebook hires all Pieceable employees
Facebook recently hired all employees from Pieceable, a web service provider which lets iOS app publishers deliver their apps to the browser and preview their apps in the browser. Facebook claimed that they didn't acquire Pieceable, they just hired their employees. Now Pieceable service is shut down. Currently there are around 800000 app demos on Pieceable, developers can try and show off their iPhone or iPad applications by putting their apps on Pieceable's web service. What Facebook did disapp...
Capture video stream with WebRTC
WebRTC(Web Real-Time Communication) is an API supporting real time audio and video communication through a browser. It is now a recommended W3C standard. This post is to show you how to capture video stream and screenshot with WebRTC. Capture video stream To play video stream from the video camera, we first need to put a video tag in our code: <video id="video"></video> The main function to get the video stream is the navigator.getUserMedia, as of now only few of the browsers support...
